ABC Matching Game Clothes Line

What do you do with an interested preschooler while you are trying to give her older siblings their homeschool lessons?

This is the question I’ve been wondering all summer as I’ve pondered how to jump back in to homeschooling come the end of August! My daughter simply loves to be a part of everything. I’ve got to find a workable solution. Since I love busy boxes and busy bags (for on the go), I am so excited to put some together for learning our ABCs right here at home.

My ABC Matching Game Clothes Line is based on the Clothes Line Busy Bag I found at Money Saving Mom. While my preschooler readily recognizes the uppercase letters, the lowercase letters are not as familiar. I decided to adapt the Clothes Line Busy Bag into an early literacy letter recognition activity.

Personalized Angel Kids Craft

For my preschooler, this angel kids craft was a nice alternative to snow play. The craft can also be converted into an angel Christmas ornament. The angel uses an outline of the child’s hands and one foot to form the wings and body, and a personal photo of the child’s face makes it personal. My daughter has a spitfire personality, so I loved the ultimate result of this craft thanks to the addition of her face to the angel.

Spanish Basics: Spanish Alphabet and Spanish Calendar Chart

My fifth grader and I are working on basic conversation in Spanish, while my kindergartner and I are at the other end of the learning spectrum: we’re focusing on basics like learning the alphabet, the days of the week, and other calendar words. Our alphabet wall cards and the calendar tracking page (and cards) help us learn basic Spanish vocabulary as we do our calendar time each day.

Apple Busy Box Activities from Toddler to Kindergarten

From when my second child was a toddler till today, when she is a kindergartner and my third child is a toddler, I keep them busy by setting up busy boxes (also called busy bags or workboxes). With fall comes apple picking season for us.  The activities and books below are perfect for an apple themed busy box!
I teach a class at our co-op, and my son is present for one or two other classes as well. This means that my two daughters get to “hang out” a lot  each week, sometimes with a different adult to watch her.
Here are some great apple-themed activities for keeping your toddler or preschooler busy.

Zoo Flakes: Symmetrical STEAM Snowflake Craft

Learning about snowflakes is a perfect lesson for learning about symmetry.  When we read Zoo Flakes ABC by Will C. Howell, we got a unique alphabet of zoo animals as well as instructions for making our own symmetrical STEAM snowflake craft.  Continue reading →

An Alphabet of People in the Community

We learned about an alphabet of people in our community by using LMNO Peas as the springboard for our own A to Z book of people.I loved the picture book LMNO Peas by Keith Baker from the first time I read it. Basing our activity on the book’s list of jobs to do, we made our own A to Z book of people in the community. The last page asks us, just as the Peas do, “Who Are You?” It’s an activity that got my daughter thinking. I asked her the question, “What activities do you do that are a part of who you are?”  Continue reading →

Uppercase-Lowercase ABC Recognition Practice with an ABC Sticker Tree

ABC Stickers + colored paper = sticker tree fun!

ABC Stickers + colored paper = sticker tree fun!

What could be more fun than sticker play for a preschooler?
I decided to play on her interest to play with ABC stickers by making her a lowercase to uppercase matching game.
This was super simple! I cut out brown paper to be a trunk and green paper with tree-like whorls. I taped these together in the shape of a tree. Then I wrote lowercase letters on the tree with a neon marker.
Strawberry found the lowercase letters on the tree and put the uppercase stickers on them.
We practiced ABC uppercase-lowercase matching with ABC stickers on a simply made tree.

She really liked that she was going out of order. Sometimes she’d pretend to do the wrong letter just to see if I was paying attention.
Playing with ABC stickers by making an ABC sticker tree like this was a nice reminder that learning activities do not have to be difficult or require a lot of preparation. It kept her engaged and learning, plus she found it to be a lot of fun!

Egg Carton ABC Penny Drop (Workbox Wednesday)

My son’s Math and Science Club teacher through the park district came to class with a pile of amazingly large egg cartons recently. They played a math game, but my daughter and I used a blank one to make an ABC Penny Drop game.
All we needed was the egg carton, a marker, and a handful of pennies. Strawberry had a ton of fun dropping or throwing the pennies at the egg carton and then delightedly telling me what letter she had landed on.
We also used some ABC flashcards to match the letter we hit to the letters of the alphabet. She was delighted whenever we landed on a letter we had not yet landed on! Continue reading →

ABCs Busy Box Ideas

Strawberry loves the LeapFrog videos that teach the letters. She is quite adept at recognizing letters (especially uppercase letters) as we go about our daily life, and often recalls the LeapFrog word most frequently associated with it. Thus, the “C” is “Cold” and the “H” is Hot. I decided to send a few letter activities in her busy box this week. She’ll loved the ABCs Busy Box! Here’s what I had for her.

I love Pinterest for ideas for education and fun! I really do not consider myself a crafty person, so when Pinterest was new, I thought I should avoid it. I figured there was nothing simple enough for me.
How wrong I was! I love all of the ideas for learning and playing that I stumble upon on Pinterest.
Today I’m sharing an idea I found for a learning game using a muffin tin.
Here was the pin I stumbled upon:

It came from Growing Book by Book, where Jodie also shared two other games with muffin tins. Continue reading →
