There is stage each of my kids has enjoyed, between two and three, when they truly loved Pete the Cat’s I Love My White Shoes! Since it is so fun to sing the song and toddlers are just starting to recognize colors, it’s a perfect stage for beginning color recognition and color matching.

Toddler Color Learning

I was amazed by my daughter’s speaking one day when I overheard her singing to herself in the back seat of the car at a very young age.

“Shoes!” I caught. Then “White!” It was clear as a bell, but she was wearing Buster Browns. What was she talking about?

After a few moments, I recognized the song: it was Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes!

Do you know that song? It is this one:

She loves shoes, she loves Pete the Cat, and she loves singing that song! It’s a perfect picture book and story for a toddler-aged learner. It provides a story about shoes that change from white to red, to blue, to brown, to white again. It shows a character being positive, even when things happen (like walking in something!).

Now it’s my third child who is bursting in to song when she sees her shoes!

Shoes Color Matching Fun File Folder

I thought I’d make up another fun game for my toddler: this time featuring all colors of cool shoes! Here is the Shoes Color Matching FREEBIE for you too.

The Shoes Color Matching game has ten pairs of shoes in ten colors. Put the shoe pairs pages on the two sides of a file folder and then cut out the individual shoes and laminate them. If you want, attach hook-and-loop tape (Velcro) to the bottom side of the shoes so you can attach them to the pairs page. My daughter loves the sound when she pulls them off!

A Picture Book Lesson to Teach Metaphors in Poetry

I’ve been creating units for kindergarten using picture books to introduce the poetic concepts of rhythm, rhyme, and metaphor. Today I thought I’d write about another picture book that would help in teaching older children about metaphors in poetry: Red Sings from Treetops by Joyce Sidman and illustrated by Pamela Zagarenski.

Red Sings from Treetops demonstrates metaphor in action throughout all the seasons! Here are some ideas for teaching with it.

Spanish Basics: Spanish Alphabet and Spanish Calendar Chart

My fifth grader and I are working on basic conversation in Spanish, while my kindergartner and I are at the other end of the learning spectrum: we’re focusing on basics like learning the alphabet, the days of the week, and other calendar words. Our alphabet wall cards and the calendar tracking page (and cards) help us learn basic Spanish vocabulary as we do our calendar time each day.

We use wall cards and a daily calendar tracking page to practice learning Spanish basics vocabulary/. Continue reading →

Practice Writing with Personal Note Cards

It is about time that I provided a blank note card alternative to my Thank You Cards product for my son’s personal use.
‘Tis the Season for….writing Christmas cards! I admit, I am really bad at this one. I put it off every year. A few years I have not sent anything.
My son, on the other hand, loves to create his own birthday cards, Christmas cards, “How are you?” cards, and so forth. But, he definitely still needs to have primary-grade lines to help him keep straight.

I Pledge Allegiance

pledge freebieOn September 11, 2001, I got up early because that was the only time my apartment of six was quiet. I read the entire New York Times and headed up to my early Economics class. When I got there, I learned of the attacks in New York.
How do I teach of this historic happening without causing my children undue fear? I am not sure yet. My son is only 6, and we talk about it a little more each year. This year, I’m focusing on what it means to be an American.
We’re going to study the Pledge of Allegiance and National Anthem today in honor of Patriot’s Day. What better way to learn about being an American than by declaring “I pledge allegiance” to this country! Continue reading →

Family History Research: Exploring Pioneers

pioneers week

As we learn about the pioneers of history, I decided to focus on a different kinds of pioneers in our family histories today. As we do personal family history research, we find fascinating stories of pioneering.

Merriam-Webster defines pioneer as follows:

: a person who helps create or develop new ideas, methods, etc.

: someone who is one of the first people to move to and live in a new area

I love how the definitions include pioneers in the traditional sense, but also pioneers in terms of creativity and methods. My ancestors were pioneers in many different ways.

Toddler School: Shapes Fun (Math Madness Wednesday)

I have noticed that my toddler, Strawberry, does not recognize shapes: she knows heart, moon, and star, but not the basics like circle and square. She calls ovals “footballs” and gets excited when she sees them though! I have been thinking for weeks that we needed to focus on learning the shapes.

When I saw that Krista’s Math Madness Wednesdays this week is about shapes, I thought it was time to put some ideas into action.

Learning while on Vacation: Our Vacation Education

vacation educationMy family took a spontaneous vacation this past week to visit family and get away. I recently reinstated our homeschooling schedule, but I knew that it was not going to be a traditional studying week. It was not, but we learned a lot without the books!
Here are some of the educational highlights. Continue reading →
