ABC Matching Game Clothes Line

What do you do with an interested preschooler while you are trying to give her older siblings their homeschool lessons?

This is the question I’ve been wondering all summer as I’ve pondered how to jump back in to homeschooling come the end of August! My daughter simply loves to be a part of everything. I’ve got to find a workable solution. Since I love busy boxes and busy bags (for on the go), I am so excited to put some together for learning our ABCs right here at home.

My ABC Matching Game Clothes Line is based on the Clothes Line Busy Bag I found at Money Saving Mom. While my preschooler readily recognizes the uppercase letters, the lowercase letters are not as familiar. I decided to adapt the Clothes Line Busy Bag into an early literacy letter recognition activity.

Pancakes PreK and Elementary Learning Fun

One of the favorite things my kids love to cook is pancakes, of course! I believe it was one of the first things I actively encouraged my kids to take part of in the kitchen, simply because it’s fun to help stir, it’s exciting to watch the pancakes sizzle and flip, and it’s delicious to pile the toppings on. There are many ways to learn with pancakes. Here are some of the great activities we’ve done in the past years.

Pancakes can be a fun learning subject for everyone from preK to early elementary school. Practice mathematics, learn cooking skills, and imagine great treats on top! Check out these pancake lesson ideas!

Fine Motor and Literacy Stickers Activity

Practice fine motor and early literacy skills by placing stickers on words. This is a preschool activity that blends fine motor skills practice in an early literacy activity. Put stickers on names, sight words, or Valentines! Since Strawberry loves stickers, the color pink (currently her favorite,, although it changes weekly), glittery things, and hearts and she’s been asking “when is Valentine’s Day?” ever since Christmas ended, she loved today’s activity.  She practiced fine motor and early literacy skills by making a sticker words page as a Valentine (for me, apparently!).Practice fine motor and early literacy skills by making sticker words. Vegetables Learning Activities

My daughter has fallen in love with VeggieTales, which is now on Netflix! She loves that each episode ends with a reminder of God’s love for each of us, and I must admit that I like that too. We also happened to read a number of fun books about vegetables (named below), so this week we have been focusing on some vegetables learning activities!

Learning about vegetables can be fun.

Name Recognition with Dominoes

We practiced name recognition with dominoes! (The green frames are from the LeapFrog dominoes set.)My daughter Strawberry loves finding her name on papers and notes around the house. Whenever she sees a “C”, she thinks it must be her name (her real name begins with “C”). She also recognizes “Mom” and “Dad,” and now she’s finding her brother’s name. (His name starts with a “P” and she loves to say “Popcorn”! when she finds his name.) This week I decided to take our super-fun Leap Frog dominoes and make a game for name recognition with dominoes, using the names of our family members.
Each of the included dominoes cards has about five matches, so this was perfect, since our family has five members in it! Continue reading →

Indoor Excavation Activity

What do you do for fun when it’s too yucky to play outside?
I’ve really been trying to keep the kids away from the tablet and television shows (especially my daughter, who is electronic-device obsessed). One of this week’s activities was “excavating” toys from a deep bowl of rice (aka “dirt”). This easy indoor excavation activity will have kids digging for familiar items in a bowl of rice. This easy indoor excavation activity will have kids digging for familiar items in a bowl of rice. --Line upon Line Learning blog
