Hands-On LDS Devotional: Painting Lehi’s Dream

Painting Lehi's dreamI love to start our school day with a simple devotional but I’m struggling with how to make it memorable for my young son when he has a sister dancing around distracting him. My son is seven now, so I know he can do more than simply listen to the words of scriptures. I know he understands.
The past few weeks we were revisiting General Conference talks but now we are back to our (very slow) study of The Book of Mormon.
This week I decided to ask Raisin respond to what we read (1 Nephi 8) by painting it. Continue reading →

Preparing for LDS General Conference

general conference1
October is approaching, and that means it’s nearly time for LDS General Conference!
In anticipation of this bi-annual gathering of members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I’ve been pondering how to best prepare my two young children. At age 6-almost-7 and 2, Raisin and Strawberry are still rather young to be fully attentive to the 8 hours of discourse and song. But there are ways to learn the message and appreciate it, and I’m grateful for The Friend magazine for providing our starting point for General Conference gospel learning! Continue reading →

LDS Temples Lapbook Freebie

Today’s freebie is something I made for my son. I’ve mentioned before that we start our day with a devotional. A few weeks ago, my husband (aka, the principal) gave Raisin an additional assignment: find out how our home is like a temple.
I put all the information that we found together into an LDS Temples lapbook and we searched for images on the LDS Media Library page.  Scroll down to get your own copy of the flip-flaps for your own LDS Temples lapbook!lds temples2 Continue reading →

Listening to God’s Will as a Parent

Many of my educational philosophies are secular, and especially on this blog, I share learning ideas that would work for people of all faiths. But it is true that I chose to homeschool initially because God asked me too!
Today I’m blogging on All Done Monkey for her Parenting and Faith series. Here’s how I start my post:

When Leanna asked how our faith influences our parenting, I could not help but recognize that my own understanding of my role as a mother came as a direct result of my faith.

I am not naturally a patient person. When my son entered the difficult toddler age, I found myself at my wits end most days. My husband frequently traveled, and my son stopped napping, so I felt there was never a respite from motherhood!

I could not wait for him to go off to school so I would not be frustrated all day long.

But my perspective changed when he was four. This was when I was guided in a completely different direction as a mother. I let myself listen to God’s will.

A Free, Simple Template for How to Pray in Spanish

It’s never easy to get a my resistant child to practice speaking in a foreign language, so one thing I like to do is move Spanish-language speaking into our familiar, daily use with getting in the habit of using certain words and phrases. Learning to pray in Spanish is one way we can put that practice into our daily lives.
Every day, we pray together three times (or more). We pray before every meal. What could be better than blending a little bit of Spanish practice in to such a familiar activity?! Learning to pray in Spanish has been a fun way to keep Spanish vocabulary in our daily routines.pray-in-spanish Continue reading →

The Articles of Faith

To correlate with my Monday’s post, here are some posters and tracing pages for the Articles of Faith of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This collection has badges that say “I can recite ….” each article of faith. Then, it has the thirteen Articles on attractive colored paper, as well as again on a grayscale background. And then, there are tracing pages — all thirteen Articles in manuscript dots and again in cursive dots. Use this to help your children learn the articles of Faith in homeschool, family home evening, or your family devotionals.

LDS Gospel Learning in Your Homeschool

lds gospel learning in your homeschoolAnd the Spirit shall be given unto you by the prayer of faith; and if ye receive not the Spirit ye shall not teach.
Doctrine and Covenants 42:14

I do not live in a predominantly LDS community. Before I began homeschooling and associating regularly with families outside of my local church circle, I did not realize the great number of religious people all around me. I know better now.
A number of the homeschoolers I’ve met have chosen to homeschool for religious reasons. Either they are concerned about the non-religious teaching or the environment of public school, or they, like me, have felt called by God to bring their children home so they’ve responded by doing so. Many of them adopt a formal devotional “curriculum” to begin their homeschool days.
I believe the scriptures are the best learning tool. However, as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I’ve also been delighted to find that many of the resources from the Church, for free, are well adapted to daily homeschool devotionals. Some of my favorite homeschool moments have been those first ones in the day when my son and I discuss gospel principles together.
Here are some ideas for how you too may want to incorporate gospel learning in to your homeschooling day. Continue reading →
