A Little Chef

I prepare breakfast granola one or two mornings a week, and Paul loves to help! He often gets up from breakfast and runs to his stool saying “cook! cook!” I found a pre-schooler cookbook and I’ve been taking it’s advice to heart: it’s not the end product that matters to a young cook, it’s the action things that they like.

Paul loves to help. From cracking eggs, to stirring, to eating the coconut flakes off the counter, he loves to cook with Mommy.

Here he is helping me cook a little pizza two weeks ago.

And then videos are the most fun!

P.S. I think Paul is smiling a cheesy smile and sitting still in the second video because he thought I was taking a regular picture, not a video.

One Year Old Party!

On Sunday, I had an extra fun day!

First, I got to meet some firemen. See, Mommy had picked me up, and she and Daddy walked around the house saying “What’s that smell? Where is it?” and then Mommy stood outside with me waiting. After the firemen came and looked in the wall and took out the light switch, one of them gave me a big silver sticker that said “Junior Firefighter.”

But that was only the beginning of the fun! Then we went to Grandma and Grandpa’s house.

Everyone sat around and watched me play with toys. I was the center of the show! These loud people kept talking over me.

Every once in a while there would be a lot of people singing. I liked the singing. I tried to sing, too. But people kept shhh-ing me.

Then we ate a very yummy dinner. Then I was ready for a nap. But Mommy wanted to give me more food and take my picture a lot and then cousin Daniel helped me open some presents. It was very tiring.

Today is fun, too. People keep signing the same song to me. I like this attention!

Mommy and Me

Hey! Guess what! I got my sixth tooth this weekend. It still hurts a lot. But I can bite in to just about everything and it’s lots of fun.

I’m a big boy now. I drink bottles and I try to feed myself my own food. I don’t want Mommy to help me. I like to be my own man.

I can walk around the couch. Then I reach everything that Mommy puts on the table that she doesn’t want me to reach. If something is in the corner of the room, I can crawl and squirm to reach it. Nothing is out of reach anymore! YEAY!

Here’s a picture of me with Mommy last week.

Mommy says she took this picture herself, so please ignore her messy hair and the weird perspective. But I don’t care if her hair is messy. I love her!

Clever Kid

  • Not only is Paul now pulling himself up on the edge of his crib (he’s standing there waiting for Daddy in the mornings), but he’s also walking along the edge of the couch if there is something he wants to eat (like expensive electronics). Here’s a video of the standing (I couldn’t get him to walk along the couch with the camera going; as the camera is an expensive electronic with a flashing light, he’d rather watch that). It takes about a minute to load.

  • If he’s not too tired (i.e., cranky), Paul will turn the pages of the bedtime story when I tell him too (sometimes he’s extra eager and turns the page too soon).
  • Paul has turned in to a master imitator. I coughed and he coughed (and laughed). I turned off the blender and he started making “whirring” noises. I read him a story with a lion and made a lion noise and he growled too. It’s quite cute.
  • Along with the imitation, Paul has started copying words. I said “Let’s go eat” and he says “Eeech” (Daddy thinks I’m imagining that to be eat, but I think it is!) and I say “Bye Bye” and he says “ba ba.” I say “water” and he says “wa wa” (again, Daddy thinks I’m imagining this).
  • For a few days, I held him in my lap as I emptied the bath water. “Bye Bye water” we said together as I dried him off. The next day and for every bath since then, he goes straight for the drain and pulls the plug. Any suggestions for how to get him off that particular habit? I’m very tired of 2 minute baths, and that’s holding him screaming while I scrub his body before I let him lose to empty the tub.

Paul is almost completely weaned. I decided to start last Tuesday night because his five-tooth biting was bloody and it was not fun. (He did it again Thursday and my decision was reinforced.) I was going to go slowly (i.e., eliminate one feed a day for a week and then eliminate the next feed for a week, etc.; I’m only giving four feeds anyway), but I think my body is ready to wean because as soon as I cut one feed, I was out of supply for two feeds. That makes me think that my supply has been low for a while and Paul’s biting was a way of saying, “I’m still hungry, and there’s nothing else here!” Now I’m giving him one feed a day (one week later!), and it also will soon be gone. Paul also seems ready. He likes the bottle and gets excited when I’m preparing it. He knows he is separate from me now, and I think holding the bottle himself is more fun than special cuddles with Mommy. *Gasp!*

I’m sad that the special baby cuddle moments will be gone, but Paul is obviously eager to be a bigger boy now. Sigh. Nine months has gone so quickly!

“More, Please!”

I’ve started signing to Paul, every sign I can remember. The day after I started signing everything, he started babbling with his hands. The only sign he has consistently made is “More” and it looks like a clap. He signs it for everything: when he’s been in the bath long enough, when he’s ready for a drink of milk, when he wants to eat, when he wants more food, when he wants something. Obviously, he doesn’t know what it means, but he knows it communicates something.

It’s quite cute. Now it’s just a matter of time before he figures out that other signs mean other things and that this sign means something in particular.

And now I need to teach him “please.”

P.S. Tooth four, the other top tooth, came in this morning.

A Tricky Mommy is NOT FUNNY!

I was so hungry. I kept saying, “Mommy. I’m hungry. Feed me now.”

But she stood over by that “microwave” thing and stirred. I know what food looks like. I could see my food. It looked yummy. I wanted to eat it.

“Mommy! Feed it to me!” I called out. “Mommy!”

But still she kept stirring.

Finally, she came over with my food. It was mine. I could tell. It was mine, not hers. She had a spoon all ready for me. I sat up and smiled.

Here it comes! I thought. It was my food, and I was going to eat it. I laughed.

Mommy blew on my spoon of food. Then she made it fly all over the room. I had a hard time following it with my eyes. Then it landed-in Mommy’s mouth!

“MOMMY! THAT WAS MY FOOD! HOW DARE YOU EAT IT!”

I was mad. And Mommy was laughing at me.

How dare she!

Apple-Mango Breakfast Cereal

I thought Paul’s rice cereal tasted pretty disgusting, but we finished an entire box.

I thought it was time to try something yummier: apple-mango rice cereal.

I don’t think Paul liked it. What do you think?

CRW_7292[1] CRW_7284[1]

Amazingly, he even refused to open his mouth after a few minutes. He rarely refuses to eat. He must really not like it.

Compare this to his response to day one of pumpkin. He really must not like apple-mango rice cereal.

I guess I need to go back and buy more of the regular rice cereal.

Oh, and happy seven months old, Paul!

My Chair

Mommy got me a chair.

CRW_7087[1]

When I sit in it, I can see a lot of things. I am up! I can see Mommy. She puts things in her mouth. I can see the table. I can see all sorts of things to grab. Most of the time I can’t reach anything.

CRW_7088[1]

Mommy gives me things to hold. One thing she gives me is this long straight thing. It doesn’t rattle. It doesn’t make noise. I just hold it and try to eat it.

CRW_7093[1]

I think that is the purpose of it: to put it in my mouth. Sometimes Mommy doesn’t want me to put things in my mouth. But then I sit here in my chair and she tries to put things in my mouth.

CRW_7094[1]

Maybe I’ll get used to this new chair. I haven’t decided yet. It’s kind of different.
