Walking and Talking and Learning

It has been so long since I’ve posted that Caroline is now a very strong walker, running constantly all over the place. She keeps me on my toes! She also speaks about 30 words and knows the ASL for a number of others. Every day I see her learning more. Her brain is hard at work finding connections between things and recognizing things she’s familiar with.

Paul is almost 6. We’re doing first grade work and he still loves to learn. Since I last posted, we’ve been on two family drives to Utah and back to spend time with cousins and grandparents.

Cute things the kids have said:
“Mom, my nozzle is clogged.” from Paul when he had a stuffy nose.

“Thank you!” from Caroline when I fixed her toy and handed it back.

Caroline walked in to church yesterday and found the pew we normally sit in. Then she ran to the nursery room door and started knocking on it. She knows the church routine!

Paul stays up super late reading every night. He must be in his bed for 7 or 7:30 but then he can stay up as long as he stays in his bed. He is enjoying Magic Tree House books and the Ramona stories.

Learning while on Vacation: Our Vacation Education

vacation educationMy family took a spontaneous vacation this past week to visit family and get away. I recently reinstated our homeschooling schedule, but I knew that it was not going to be a traditional studying week. It was not, but we learned a lot without the books!
Here are some of the educational highlights. Continue reading →

Ten Things I Learned from Hosting a Summer Science Club

summer science club

For the past four weeks, I have been doing an afternoon science club on Tuesday afternoons. I prepared some lessons based on a product I purchased from TeachersPayTeachers about simple machines. I had snacks for the kids to enjoy. We did a lapbook craftivity together. I let the kids run around the yard.

Overall, despite my initial trepidation, it was a lot of fun. Here are some of the things I learned.

Finding Alone Time while Homeschooling

alone time while homeschooling
And then I had this guilty thought: if I were not homeschooling, my son would be in school for hours every day. I could feel like that every day, all week long!
I felt bad the moment I had that thought. Was I wishing away my son? Don’t I love homeschooling?
The fact is that as an introvert, I get energy from being alone. Being around my two kids all day long gets very tiresome. And while I do love homeschooling, it is truly a labor of love. Here are some things I’ve found that help me get alone time when I truly need it.

Learning Places (AKA My Homeschool “Rooms” 2013-2014)

school room mainWhen some people think of homeschooling, they might think of student desks and chalkboards. We do some desk work, and Raisin does work on a computer. But lots of our school work in the next year will be done in the basement play room or in the car or at co-op! Here are some of the places we learn.  Continue reading →

Planning for Next Year: 2013-2014 First Grade Curriculum

I mentioned two weeks ago that I have loved embracing unschooling this summer. Almost as soon as I said that, I started craving schedule and boxes to check mark as finished. But I know I don’t really want that! I still want to let me my son’s summer be as it is … and I want to embrace unschooling much more this school year!
That said, I’m ready to look forward to the next year. Here are some of the resources we’ll be using for Raisin’s first grade year. It’s hard to believe that if we were going to send him to public school he’d only now be going into kindergarten! With that in mind, I’m not in a hurry to “finish” curriculum. We’ll just go at his pace.

Ten Homeschool Learning Tools I Love

homeschool learning toolsThis week I thought I’d begin joining in with Top Ten Tuesday at Many Little Blessings. But Tuesday has passed and I did not finish this post, so you’ll have to bear with me and take it on Wednesday.

Today I decided to talk about the top ten learning tools I have loved in homeschool thus far. I just finished my first full year, and we’re enjoying a more casual summer, with some unschooling as well as some more formal learning going on! Continue reading →
