My mom is a winner!
I mean, I already knew that, but now she’s been recognized as such. She wrote an essay about what the Naperville Municipal Band means to Naperville. As the winner of the essay contest, she earned the opportunity to direct the band at the last concert of the season! Here are the video of the event.
An introduction to my mom, and the story of the baton.
Kay from the band reads Mom’s winning essay, and Mom walks onstage. (I apologize for the unsteadiness; Paul was trying to run away, onto the stage.)
And then Mom directs the band in the Washington Post March. (Paul keeps saying “Grandma! Grandma!” through a lot of it.)
Congratulations, Mom! I’m so proud and happy for you.

Thank you Rebecca. If there is a lesson, it is this: if you think you ought to write an essay, just go home and do it. I would really have kicked myself if I’d had to sit there watching someone else lead the band knowing that I hadn’t even tried to enter the contest.
Then there is this: If you get called to lead the ward choir, say yes. You never know when that newly developing skill will come in handy!
Way to go mom!!! And thanks to Rebecca for documeting this. I wish I could have been there!
So Mom, does this mean that next Memorial day you are going to buy me plane tickets to come home???? (HEHEHE)
