I shift my son from my left hip to my right, and he whines and squirms for escape. The diaper bag over my shoulder slips to my elbow and I stop to reposition it.
My husband stops beside me, reaching for the bag, his wheeled bag toppling.
“You got it?”
I nod but hand him the diaper bag, again repositioning the eight-month-old rock squirming in my arms.
My son smiles and reaches for his daddy, but I pull him close to me. We walk. Up the escalator and we’ll be there, here, done, finished, back again, finally returned.
This made me smile so much, because I read it just after reading your comment on my post about my husband traveling. We enacted this exact scenario so many times, I felt as if you had walked in my shoes -25 years ago!!
You are quite the master of capturing an entire sense of place and feeling in very few words.
Well done!
@Becca: I’ve been giving myself these prompts with the assignment of capturing an emotion or setting or character in 100 words or less. I guess I figure I don’t have time for long scenes. I don’t do poetry, but I guess I’m considering it a similar type of assignment!
I think it’s perfect – I can see it all happening!
That sounds like a great writing excercise. I like writing short posts too every now and then – you can really concentrate on what’s happening in the moment. 🙂
@texasblu:
I think it’s partially a comment on my time constraints too! Thanks for visiting
