Updates and Progress

Paul loves preschool. Loves it. From the first day, he runs in and says “bye” without hesitation. This is how it’s always been. He has never been sad for me to leave him (except for about a month when I started working at the library one day a week. I think he was sad then, though, not because he was with Daddy and not me but because I wasn’t taking him to the library too.). As for preschool, though, it’s just what he needs. He gets little friends to play with him, teachers who love him and encourage him, new toys to enjoy, craft activities and outside time. He still follows me around the house asking me to play games with him. But it’s okay because he knows he has preschool to look forward to the other days.

Preschool Day One

He saw me come in and ran over. “Mommy!”

“Hi honey!”

“I played with play dough!” He jumped up and down.

“How fun! What else did you do?”

“uhhhhhhh…..”

He couldn’t answer. Not a single other thing could he explain. I prompted him and asked the teacher and found he also had a snack and went outside and read a story. Now I know what general things they do so I can ask, but that first day was revealing. His two hours at preschool are unknowns to me because he won’t always be able to tell me what he did.

Preschool Day Two

In the car on the way home, I asked him about his new little friends.

“Is Nick your friend?”

“Yes.”

“Is Gracie your friend?”

“Yes.”

“Who else is your friend at preschool?”

“Jesus! He is my friend. He’s in every prayer.”

Awwwww. Paul goes to a Lutheran preschool and I’m glad to know they’ve already gotten the important bits in.

Imagination

Paul has an overactive imagination. There is nothing wrong with it, that is for sure. He has been enjoying the Richard Scarry books, and I found some “Busytown Mysteries” movies at the library to watch. He loves them and watches them over and over again. So much so that now Goldbug is his special imaginary friend.

“Mommy! Don’t clean that toilet! Goldbug is sitting there. He’s going pee and poop!”

“Mommy, Goldbug is hungry.”

“Goldbug is coming to church today, Mommy.” (“Is he going to sit reverently?” I asked. “Yes.” Later, Paul was squirming. I asked him to show Goldbug how to sit reverently and Paul immediately sat up and sat still.)

“Today is Goldbug’s birthday, Mommy. He’s a big boy! He’s six years old!”

“Goldbug is driving to preschool in his own car, Mommy. It’s right there [pointing out the window].”

“When we get to preschool, Paul and Goldbug need to wash their hands.” [They have to wash hands before they come in the room.]

Progress

On Sunday, Mommy and Daddy got tired of the Paul-goes-Poop-in-Pull-Ups game. I told him it was no longer acceptable to go poop in his pullups “because I was playing” or “because I was watching my movie” or “because I was too busy.” From now on we’re wearing underpants.

Monday and Tuesday were completely dry. Wednesday, two accidents. Thursday, one. We’re doing okay. He just needed that ultimatum, I guess. No more Pull-ups. They are too much like diapers, he doesn’t feel like stopping playing. He doesn’t like scrubbing out the underpants, though, so I think that is motivation… Plus the bribery toy when he finishes his potty chart.

In short, Paul is happy. He’s growing up quickly.

Blues Clues and the Three Bears

It started with cooking. Paul has been “cooking” oatmeal (aka magnets, blocks, puzzle pieces, etc.) underneath the television for the past year. Then I recently told him the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and we read James Marshall’s version, which is quite playful and fun (baby bear’s chair breaks into “smithereens,” for example). He loves the story, maybe because he loves oatmeal. He sits at the breakfast table saying “I’m Goldilocks!” whenever he eats his oatmeal “all up.”

Then a few weeks ago we played with puppets at the local library. We came home and he was jumping on his bed “doing a puppet show.” So I got some paper bags and said we’d make puppets.

“That’s not a puppet! That’s a paper bag!” my very astute two-year-old exclaimed with a frown.

But a few crayon marks later and some construction paper ears/hair and we had Goldilocks and the three bears.

goldilocks-and-bears[1]

Papa is frowning because he’s always mad (says Paul). Mama bear has a yellow dress. And baby bear has a t-shirt and shorts.

Then one morning I came down stairs and Goldilocks was in the garbage.

“I want a Blues Clues puppet!” said Paul. So we made Blue. (In the show called Blues Clues, which we rarely watch, the dog’s name is “Blue”. In our house, the dog is named “Blues Clues”.)

This morning we recorded a video of his puppet show. I must apologize: this is very long (more than 5 minutes). We did it again and it was shorter but it was not as cute (he forgot lines and went out of order, which is cute in it’s own right I suppose). And because I did the video on my phone (my point and shoot is not working very well) I cannot edit it in Windows Movie Maker (it’s .mp4 format which I can’t edit in). My voice is also very loud and Paul’s is too quiet. At any rate, you can hear Paul tell the story very well. He loves doing this.

Nauvoo

As was mentioned, we drove to Nauvoo this last week. The first day (Tuesday), he enjoyed learning about Joseph Smith at Carthage, even if the movie and then the tour was a little too long for him. Then, at the visitor’s Center, a full ten mintues got him through all the exhibits. Lots of exclamations of “Joseph Smith!” and “Jesus” when he saw something familiar. Then, Paul saw two and a half of the restored old houses (he had a fit during the blacksmith, which I thought he would have liked) and the second day he made it through a visit to the bakery. And that was it. I overestimated how “fun” it would be for a two year old.

We did play a little bit at the Pioneer Pastimes station, which has pioneer games. But it was sweltering, so we didn’t stay outside long, and in fact came home Wednesday afternoon. (They closed the outdoor exhibits due to excessive heat and Paul would not sit through the inside things.) Before it got too hot, we also went to the ox cart ride. Homer and his friend (forgot the other ox’s name) walking in a circle for about 4 minutes and Paul got to pet his back. He has said “I rode a Ox!” to anyone who will listen every day since then.

Paul also loved seeing the Temple.

I think our brief time in Nauvoo was just right for him.

Mommy and Daddy took pictures of the Nauvoo Temple  and so we encouraged Paul to as well since we gave him that cheap camera. He took a couple pictures and then said, “I did already” so I don’t think he understood why his amateur photographer father took an hour of pictures!

Here are Paul’s pictures. I’ve omitted the dozens of pictures of his fingers and of the wall, floor, grass, etc. I know these below still are silly and out of focus but I’m actually pretty impressed that I could tell what he was taking pictures of!

Yes, he took this himself!

I held the camera for him while he pushed the button.

He did this all himself! He wanted a picture of the "other temple," i.e., the Catholic church building next to the Nauvoo temple.

Teasing

The other night, I was in the other room while Paul and Daddy laughed and played. After a little while, Paul came in to find me.

“Mommy,” he said in a toddler whine. “Daddy stole my nose!!”

“Tell him to give it back,” I responded, trying to surpress a laugh.

From the other room, I could hear Paul repeating this request to Daddy. Daddy, being the joker that he is, said, “I can’t. I ate it.”

I went in a moment later to see Paul with his definitive sad face (lip protruding as far as it would go) and the saddest little look on his face. Apparently, this was pretty serious.

I let him steal my nose too, and all was well. Still, I’ll never forget that little toddler tattle-tale whine: “Daddy stole my nose!!”

Grandma Peggy and Papa Paul’s Visit: A Trip to Wisconsin and the Train Museum

On the Monday morning when Grandma Peggy and Papa Paul were here (Memorial Day), we went to Wisconsin! We were going to go somewhere closer to home, but it was pouring rain so we drove an hour and spent some time at Lake Geneva. It was not raining in Wisconsin. I liked the playground we played at!

I also had fun walking down the board walk with Grandma, Papa, Mommy, and Daddy.

It was really sunny, so I didn't want to open my eyes!

On our way home from Lake Geneva, we went to the Train Museum! I had asked about it all day. “Train Museum now?” I kept saying. I was glad when we finally went there.

I got to ride on a train!

Even better, I got to ride on Grandma Peggy's lap while we rode on the train!

I had so much fun with Grandma Peggy and Papa Paul!

Paul’s Reading

I like to read and I’ve been wanting to make reading with Paul a special project, so I decided to read 1000 different books with Paul before he starts kindergarten. I started last December, and I though it would be hard. 1000 book sounds like a lot! But just a few months later, we’re almost to 300. It’s so easy to add a few more picture books to the library bag when we’re there, and Paul has loved going through all the books and finding new favorites. We read most books (of those 300) more than three times before returning them to the library, and a handful each week are read more than a dozen times. He loves to read!

I’ve been taking lots of videos of Paul reading his books. Here are just two. The first is the very first one I took, back in January, when I found him, unexpectedly, emptying the library bag to read the books himself. Paul is reading an opposite book and Little Boy by Allison McGhee. That second book refers to a big box on each page, and I think I can hear Paul saying “big box.” Video taken January 25, 2010.

And then, here is my absolute favorite video. Paul is reading himself Chicka Chicka Bom Boom. He loves the pages at the beginning and end with the letters. And you’ll notice his sensitivity to others: he kisses the letters better when they get ouchies. His favorite letter is blacked-eyed P. He also loves BOOMing. Video taken about April 2, 2010.

Cache River Wild Life Area (AKA Jumping in Puddles)

It has been a long time since our family went anywhere, so we took advantage of the no Sunday responsibilities weekend on Easter and drove to southern Illinois to the Cache River Wild Life Area — a state park. Mommy and Daddy took some pictures and Paul enjoyed going for walks and jumping in puddles. Mommy really wanted to see an Easter sunrise and she got her wish!

We also gave him a (very cheap) digital camera and he had fun taking some of his own pictures.

Nice job, Paul!

(I would say maybe he needs practice focusing, but I promise, this camera is so cheap I don’t know if better focus is possible!!)

Why Do I Love This Picture So Much?

pauls-painting-lr[1]

Painted by Paul, February 2010

I am not a “post it on the fridge Mom,” probably because my mother never was. But this painting by my son has been in the place of honor for weeks. I love it.

Paul asked me to take a turn, so I added the red border around it. He did the rest. I love how the colors are washed out in the middle. I love the vibrancy of the purple and the green (it doesn’t show up well in the scan). I just love knowing how much fun Paul had in painting it. It is his masterpiece for age 2 and a half.
