What Paul Loves

I don’t have wedding pictures yet, and I don’t have time to find some from my camera (most of mine didn’t turn out anyway), but here are some quick Paul “favorites” updates.

Paul loves:

  • Trains, Planes, and Automobiles. Yes, he’s a boy.
  • New things, including people, places, and events. He (normally) loves new situations and just watches fascinated as new things happen. Case in point: the haircut last week. He didn’t even squirm, just sat there with a big smile on his face. There are always exceptions, but normally, new things are fun.
  • Nursery. I’m not sure why he loves nursery, because whenever I go in for singing time (I’m the song leader), he’s knocking over kids trying to give them hugs and kisses.
  • Hugs and kisses. He finds these fun to give. I love the moments he lets me cuddle, even for the briefest second. I hope this isn’t top on his list when he’s 15.
  • Schedules. Paul has had a few non-scheduled days lately because of family events, and he’s been a whiny puss. Even when his nap is shorter than normal, he becomes a basket case when something isn’t just as he wants it. I certainly encourage schedules, but I try to follow what he needs too (i.e., unlike some moms, I don’t wake him from his nap at the same time each day. That’s nuts!). It always takes a least a day to recover from an “off-nap” day or a “stay up too late” night. I like to stick with the normally planned schedule just so I can ignore those whines!
  • Daddy. Oh, he loves his daddy when he’s home! He’s a fun daddy.
  • The toilet. What fun to sit on the Winnie-the-Pooh chair and clap when something comes out!
  • Winnie-the-Pooh. Still a favorite friend. We’re rereading the books right now, and Paul definitely likes me to read it to him.
  • Puzzles. Paul is very good at puzzles, and normally has the patience to put all the pieces in the right spot, even the 26 piece alphabet puzzle!
  • Dancing. We watched Mary Poppins this week, and he was dancing, and trying to do somersaults, when we got to the Stepping Time “rooftops of London” scene. Very cute.
  • Outside. Paul loves his hat, he helps me put his sunblock on, and then he runs to the swing and slide. When I’m weeding, he “helps” by digging in the dirt.
  • Mail. Paul likes to help me get the mail. For some reason.

Okay, that’s a start for a bunch of stuff he loves. Hopefully I’ll post some cute wedding pictures or cousin pictures in the coming days!

Paul’s 19-Month Checkup

Vital Stats

  • height: 33 1/2 inches tall (75th percentile)
  • weight: 26 lbs 13 oz (50th percentile)

Paul is an incredibly happy boy, and apparently he is completely up-to-date developmentally. The doctor kept saying “Oh he’s so good” when he did things like open his mouth when she asked him too. I think he was just observing and taking it all in because it was all new to him (relatively; he doesn’t remember the last visit three months ago).

When the doctor left, we had to wait for the nurse. He was ready to be done though. He kept walking to the door saying “go? Go? GO!” When the nurse finally came, he got two shots. He wasn’t sure what was going on with the first one, and since we were clapping and saying “yeay!”, he started clapping too. For the second shot, he was a little more wary and tried to pull away. It brought tears, but when he saw the bandaids, he was fascinated with that too, and even the tears stopped.

Overall, I love my boy. This week’s special words are “Hi! Hi!” and “Bye! Bye!” to strangers both coming and going, “shoes” as he wanders the house looking for them (anyone’s is fine), and “go!” for everything and everywhere. He still signs “thank you” with a little kiss.

Paul Updates

Paul finally has enough hair that I had to buy him a brush this week. When it is wet, it is matted and long. When it dries, it curls in the back to produce an adorable head of curls. Ryan is quite traumatized by this: every time someone comes up and says “What adorable curls! What lovely hair!” he has memories of his own childhood. He, apparently, hated having curly red hair because everyone wanted to touch it. Alas: like father, like son.

Paul is signing at least 30 words now — surprising me every day with new ones. I shouldn’t be too surprized since Signing Time is his only show these days.

Paul is saying at least 15 words. Sometimes his talking sounds like babbling and other times it actually is words.

Paul has become fascinated with dogs and birds. He also loves the train table at the library. He also loves the slide and the swing at the park: I need to fix up our play set in our yard because right now it’s not useful for a baby Paul’s age.

Paul has a runny nose again this week. It will never stop, I’ve decided.

Paul’s naps are still sporadic. I never know if he’ll go down or when he’ll be ready for it. (Saturday he was ready at 10 a.m. and he slept for three hours. Today it was one hour. And that’s it.)

Paul likes his binkie. He can only have it when he’s in his bed, so sometimes he begs to go in his crib, just to have his binkie. Ten minutes later, he’s ready to go on with his day again.

Paul is a smart kid. There are so many stories I meant to share. I’m going to have to write them down as soon as they happen because now I’ve forgotten!

Under the Weather

Today was another beautiful day but Paul and I are still feeling rather under the weather. Paul expressed it by crying and screaming pretty much all day.

The whole family was knocked off our feet over the weekend, and while Daddy and Paul were a little better on Monday and Tuesday, Mommy didn’t start to feel like a human again until yesterday afternoon.

Today, though, Paul’s cough seemed worse, and every time he coughed, he proceeded to cry for the next five minutes. He was tired of TV. But he wanted to watch TV!! He was tired of being inside. But he didn’t want to be outside!! He was hungry. But he didn’t want to eat!! He wanted to rest. But he didn’t want to be in his crib, alone, asleep!!

It was a day of frustration and noise. He was nearly begging for bed, so he’s already down for the night a bit earlier than normal. I’ve heard a few coughs, but I’m hoping he stays down and can get some sleep.

Ah. The house is so quiet. I just love that sound.

The Stage of Frustration

Paul has reached a new stage: frustration. He can’t talk, but he thinks he can. So he has lots of mini-tantrums every day. He says: “Goggol bubble mmmmmlophble.” When I don’t do what he wants, he repeats himself louder. Then he starts to scream.

On the other hand, he also knows about 25 signs. Apple, cracker, help, please, thank you, milk, more, banana, cookie, shoes, socks, play, ball, eat, water, bath, and I’m sure I’m missing a number of them. When he signs one of those things and I can’t do what he wants, he screams.

I know this is stage. And I don’t want to indulge his every whim. I’ll give him what he wants when I can. But some days it’s a bit frustrating on this end too.

Paul, the world won’t end when you don’t get what you want! How long will it take you to learn this?

On the other hand, I got him a hat for when Mommy and Daddy are working out in the yard and it’s sunny. Here he is eating his lunch on the deck Saturday. (For some reason, I couldn’t get him to smile at first. Maybe the sun was in his eyes.)

Back to Napping

My goal was to post an update on Paul on Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday each week. Now it is already Wednesday. How time flies!

Paul got sick along with Mommy and Daddy last week. While he wasn’t coughing, sneezing, and otherwise acting sick, he certainly acted like he felt miserable. I mentioned in the last update that he was phasing out his naps — but then last week there was a day when he slept for more than 4 hours during the day! He was definitely acting unwell. He’s better now, but he is back to taking a two-hour nap. Only time will tell how long he’ll keep that up.

Daddy was working from home last week. Paul absolutely loved to have Daddy around, and always looked for him over Mommy. When Mommy tried to take him to do other things, he cried and whined for Daddy. Daddy is much more fun! Paul is definitely a Daddy’s boy. Daddy is traveling again this week, but Paul will love to have him home Thursday and Friday.

Other than being a bit whiny and testing Mommy’s patience everyday, Paul is still the delightful boy he’s always been.

Winnie the Pooh

I visited another thrift shop this week. They had a sale on kid’s clothes and I got a few things. It is amazing how many of the thrift shop items (for boys, at least) are Winnie-the-Pooh related! I got Paul’s chair a few weeks ago and now I got some jeans and a Winnie-the-Pooh outfit. If only it were Halloween, Paul would be all set!

I’d never buy an outfit like this off the store rack, but at a thrift shop for less than $1? Sure. I think he is adorable, although this outfit makes him look more like a baby. Lately, he’s been looking a lot like a little boy, so I’m OK with that reversal!

Paul loves to play in the closets in his room; that’s what he’s doing in those pictures above.

In other news, Paul is phasing out his nap. His only nap. A few days in the last few weeks he hasn’t napped at all when I put him in his bed; other days he sleeps just one hour before awaking. But then he sleeps for more than two hours Sunday afternoon, so maybe he’s not completely done with the napping.

I am in mourning! What will I do without that precious two-hour break in the middle of the day?

Paul’s First Week (At the New House)

I have a friend who sends an email/photo update to her parents and in-laws every single Sunday, without fail. Since this website is Paul’s journal, as well as my “update” to family, I really must do a better job of taking pictures of Paul and sending them on!

General Update

  • Paul’s future occupation will probably be janitor. He loves to pick things up to throw away or put away. He loves to “sweep” with the broom.
  • Paul tumbled down a full flight of stairs this week. Mommy panicked and thought he was going to be broken — but he only had a few bruises and a rug burn on his face and back.
  • Paul hates the car wash. He screams and kicks and otherwise is very, very sad. I’m not sure why. I always loved it as a kid. But, I must remember to wash the car when Paul is not in the backseat.
  • Daddy left at night to go to airport last week (he usually leaves in the morning), so Paul and I walked him to the door. I thought Paul would have fun waving “bye bye.” He actually was quite upset and cried for a minute after I closed the door. “Bye-bye” must be too permanent; most of the people we tell “bye-bye” are strangers.

Photo Update

Paul was a ham for the camera before breakfast one morning. Paul looks more and more like a little boy and less and less like a baby.

Paul likes to jam.

A Second Belated Update

Paul can sign. It’s fun to watch the comprehension as I teach him a new sign. He’s always known More and Milk, but he’s added banana, bread, and water. Now he babbles in sign — he thinks he’s telling me something. He babbles in “giggle-giggle” too. “Giggle-giggle” is Paul’s normal language because he thinks he can talk and yet everything he says sounds like “giggle” or “gaggle” or something similar. In this video, he’s eating and signing banana.

Paul feeds himself. I love this stage, and yet I hate it. It’s nice to be able to eat my own lunch, but sometimes it get a bit messy by the time Paul is done eating. Plus, he takes forever.

Paul’s also getting better at going down and up stairs and he’s a pretty competent walker by now. He’s still happy just about all the time (except when he has the 24-hour flu or when he’s congested, as he was a Christmas). What a delight he is in our lives!

Compare these videos with the pictures I found yesterday. What a difference!

A Much Belated Paul Update

I’ve somehow completely neglected to tell about Paul’s second Christmas. On my webpage, I’ve already posted the extend family pictures and about the great times we spent together. I should add that Paul loved the wrapping paper. For the first few presents, he was so excited to get to throw out the wrappings that he didn’t notice the toy underneath it! It was fun to be so close to family and to be able to visit with them.

He was, unfortunately, quite sick Christmas Eve. He was up from 1 til 2 and finally settled back to sleep. But his cold was not his friend!

Since I’ve given an update, he’s learned a lot and grown into quite a little boy.

First, thanks to Sandra Boynton’s Horns to Toes and In Between, he knows the location of his head, ears, toes, belly button, and eyes (which he likes to cover because that’s what I do when I read him the book). His favorite is his head. In this video, I am not pointing…

Also, Paul likes to dance. Always.

Paul loves ring-a-round-the-rosies. But forget about the ring. Let’s just fall down!

More in the next post!
