Australia: July 2007 Photos

We found some time to see our new home last month. I’m really not a photographer, but I’m having a fun time learning how my camera works. Here are some galleries of my pictures. They really are more snap shots than real “photographs” but I had fun, and that’s the key.

Downtown Melbourne during an early Saturday morning walk.

A day trip to St. Kilda, just outside Melbourne. I desperately wanted to see the ocean and the beach. It was a gray “wintery” day and I have found that I prefer most of these pictures in black and white to match the feeling of the day.

We visited the Dandenongs on two Saturdays. The first was rainy and misty. The second was bright and sunny. I enjoy the greens of the forest but I also enjoy the subtlety of black and white.

We’re enjoying the constantly updated predictions about Paul’s expected arrival, but we wonder if you have considered the impact of the different time zone? Then there’s the business about the slowing of time when you travel at high speed, which I’ve never actually believed in, despite Newton. 😕 What will happen if you go overdue? Will the web site say that you pregnancy is 102 percent over? Did I just ask a really rude question? 😳

Your pictures are beautiful and help us understand where you are. I somehow thought I would see hills in the Dandenongs. Instead, it looks like a tropical rain forest–with ferns in the middle of the winter. The beach scene had boys in short sleeves, despite your claim that it was a wintery day. The pictures themselves are great. I like the way the sun highlights one part of the bridge and the building beyond it. Mom

Hmm. Haven’t considered time zones. Who knows how accurate due dates are, anyway. If it comes to my pregnancy being 102 percent over, I may have to insert something sarcastic into the count down stat. I guess we’ll see… My prediction is that I’ll be feeling pretty miserable by then…

The Dandenongs are gentle hills for those of you used to Utah mountains. I think they do look exotic like a rain forest. The second Saturday was pretty clear, but it had rained for a week so many things still were wet.

As for the shorts on a wintery day: yes, that’s winter in Melbourne for you. It has gotten chilly a few days–down to probably the high 30s. I even wore my wool winter coat a few times. But today it was probably over 70. So beautiful! I’m thinking that means that winter is over.

As a side note to Mom: Didn’t you have a child who left home without a coat in a Chicago winter? Is it that surprising that people wear shorts in a Melbourne winter?
